Blood in the Snow Pt. I - Battle Report

A note regarding this report:

6th Edition rules were used for this battle.  While we would have loved to use 7th, we simply don't have the rulebook yet!  It'll happen soon, we promise.   Army lists omit wargear and weapons, though exact model count is accurate.  More precise accounts will be recorded when I figure a way to link Battlescribe to this blog, or take the time to record both side's exact options (time was tight this afternoon).  Regardless, the majority of events are detailed here!  The battle is not broken down turn-by-turn, which I regret - but it'll have to do for now, I didn't take complete enough notes to dictate exact ordering of events.  It should also be noted I was instructing a second table how to play, while also playing my own game, and trying to take notes - it was hectic!  In the future I will make every effort to plan these reports better.

Battlefield

On a suitably laid out table, we rolled for 5 unknown objectives, to be placed by both players in turn, and were scattered appropriately throughout the table.  As the game progressed, it turned out only two of the tokens were indeed valuable, as shown below.  The corresponding deployment zones for the armies are color coded for Orks (green) and Blackfang Warband (red). References to "left" and "right" are assumed to be from the particular player's position.

You'll have to pretend it's snowy.  Yellow X's mark the two true objectives.

Deployment

On the Blackfang Warband's side, the Terminators held the left flank among the ruins of a makeshift barricade, their mission was to anchor that side and potentially capture the objective at the crashed landspeeder.  In the center, the Sorcerer lurked behind the Maulerfiend, with ten traitor marines in the ruined administrative building who would provide covering fire with bolters and two plasma guns.  The Maulerfiend and Sorcerer would try to uncover the (later revealed to be false) objective in the center of the board.  To the right flank, ten additional chaos space marines armed with chainswords and pistols would advance with a Daemon Prince to try and secure the objective at the steps of the great basilica.

My opponent's Waaaagh had arrayed a great number of boyz against the might of the renegades, I had my work cut out for me.  To the Ork's right flank, 20 boyz would be in and around the landing pad, also hoping to capture the objective at the wrecked landspeeder.  Just to the left of the landing pad, a Battlewagon full of Nobs was parked, ready to speed forward, pointing its many weapons at the Maulerfiend across the avenue.  Five Lootas took up shop in the ruined building in the Ork's center, with ten boyz and a mega-armored Big Mek guiding their wild trajectories.  The left flank was secured with the Deff Dread, Warboss Teefpulla, and ten additional boyz, eager to claim the objective at the basilica.

Battle

I decided to go first after winning the roll.  The Terminators advanced, firing on the lurking ork mob that was infesting the landing site, killing three and causing one of the squads to fall back due to casualties sustained.  The Maulerfiend and Sorcerer charged the center, as the powers of Tzeentch manifested in a great conflagration of pink-blue fire, killing several distant orks and causing the rest to turn and flee.  On the right flank, the marines charged toward the objective, firing pistols as they advanced (with little effect) - the orks were dug in behind the twisting ruins.  The Daemon Prince stalked between the crumbling columns of the basilica's entryway, hoping to lure the Deff Dread away from the marines.  The fire-support squad in the center opened fire on the Lootas, killing four in their opening volley, but the last Loota held fast, resolved to fight on!

All retreating Orks regrouped at the onset of their turn, to my disdain. The orks advanced forward on all fronts, with no effective infantry shooting taking place during the first turn.  The battlewagon, however, opened fire on the approaching Maulerfiend, inflicting a loss of a single hull point.  Warboss Teefpulla and ten of his boyz charged the advancing marines on the basilica steps, killing three of the Blackfang number, while suffering no losses themselves.

The Terminators, having closed the distance to the landing pad, unleashed a fiery torrent with their Heavy Flamer, incinerating seven of the ten orks atop the structure.  In their fury, the orks returned fire with their pistols, managing to bring down a terminator-armored marine with their wild shooting.

In the center, vicious fighting had been taking place in the shadow of colossal statue depicting some unknown hero of the Imperium, with three more marines falling to the brutal ork choppas.  Only two marines were left, but they would rather die gloriously for Khorne than turn and flee - they held their ground!  The Maulerfiend closed with the Battlewagon, making short work of its armor plating, and managed to inflict two losses of hull points, while rattling the nobz inside.

The Sorcerer attempted to conjure up damning flame once more, but asked too much of Tzeentch, and rolled snake eyes!   Suffering a wound (would've been more fun with the 7th Ed. chart, apprently!), he lit the same ork mob on fire, inflicting two further wounds.  The Orks returned fire with their pistols, reducing the Librarian to a lump of bullet-ridden flesh.  That's two terminator armored models killed by ork pistol fire, for those keeping track at home! The renegade fire-support squad in the center sniped off the final Loota.  He was still smiling and blazing away as he tumbled from the second level of the building.

A Daemon Prince of Khorne is a terrifying sight, but the Deff Dread stood firm as it charged the beast, deep within the basilica's echoing and cavernous ruin.  The overconfident ork gleefully accepted the duel, but was soon being ripped from the makeshift cockpit and splattered against a nearby column.  The explosion from the wrecked dreadnought did inflict a wound on the Daemon, however, to the delight of my opponent.

After a silent round of shooting (almost everyone was locked in combat!), the Daemon Prince burst through the basilica doors and pointed a challenge to the enemy Warboss, who reluctantly accepted.  The Warboss soon became green paste, as the horrified ork mob looked on, before returning to their grisly work hacking the remaining marines to oblivion - the chaos squad was wiped out in bloody vengeance.

Having enough of the nonsense outside their battlewagon, the Nobz disembarked, and eyed the Terminators across the landing pad.  They would begin a move in that direction, but would first inflict a second loss of hull points on the Maulerfiend with their power klaw.  It would be too late, however, as the game was ending, and the Orks were either dead or scattered too far to be effective.  The Maulerfiend ripped three of the Nobz apart before the game came to a close.

In the end the Blackfang Warband held a single objective near the basilica, while the second was not held by either party. A victory for the Blackfang Warband, but at a cost!
